about1Meet the Creator

Hello!

My name is Melissa and I am the owner and creator of Mystic Needles. I LOVE sewing, knitting, and crochet. I love using textiles to create new items. My favorite things to bring to life are unique children toys and quilts. One of the best things is to see the joy on someone’s face when they receive a toy or quilt that I made. I especially love to see the wonder and joy my creations bring to children.  I began knitting and crocheting when my son was two. (He is twelve now. Kids grow too fast!) I needed to get out of the house to talk to adults. I loved knitting and crochet so much that I soon began to collect a lot of yarn. Family and friends all received a lot of scarves and afghans in the upcoming years.

A couple years later my parents and husband bought me a sewing machine for Christmas. I loved it! I started taking quilting classes. I found some patterns to make toys for children. My son, nephews and nieces all received stuffed toys for Christmas. I had so much fun making the toys. I thought of how wonderful it would be to make toys for others.

I donated toys to charity and friends with sick children (and still do), but I wanted to do more. I began to think about starting my own business. I opened my Etsy shop in February 2013 and haven’t looked back. I have been having such a great time making unique children toys, fun and functional bags, and quilts for people all over the world. I have been so blessed to have such a supportive and loving family. I have wonderful customers from all over the world.

How did Mystic Needles get its name?

When I began to think about opening a shop I needed an awesome shop name. I would have opened a shop a couple earlier than I did, but I had a hard time coming up with a name that seemed just right.  I had a couple good ideas, but none was perfect.

I finally asked my sisters and cousins for help. I told them I had been thinking about using that had to do with our childhood and sewing, knitting, and crochet. As pre-teens and teens, we would watch the movies “Mystic Pizza” and “Shag” every time we saw each other. (We can all still quote most of “Shag.”)

We played with quotes from the movie, “Shag,” but none really worked. A suggestion of Mystic Needles was made. I knew that was it! Mystic Needles was born.
